Expanding Horizons

I selected Save the Children because they are an organization that has a strong mission belief in a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation. It is an organization that is noted for its accountability, ambition, collaboration, creativity, and integrity, and is deeply embedded in the health, safety and education of children worldwide, which I strongly believe should be the focus of all educators. Its' mission is "to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives" (Save the Children, 2020).

My focus on this website is to find information the fight against of child trafficking. There are a ton of articles on worldwide child trafficking and the effect on young children presented on this orizations website. Child trafficking is a crime – and represents the tragic end of childhood. It refers to the exploitation of girls and boys, primarily for forced labor and sexual exploitation. Children account for 27% of all the human trafficking victims worldwide, and two out of every three child victims are girls. Sometimes sold by a family member or an acquaintance, sometimes lured by false promises of education and a "better" life the reality is that these trafficked and exploited children are held in slave-like conditions without enough food, shelter or clothing, and are often severely abused and cut off from all contact with their families. Children are often trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation or for labor, such as domestic servitude, agricultural work, factory work and mining, or they’re forced to fight in conflicts. The most vulnerable children, particularly refugees and migrants, are often preyed upon and their hopes for an education, a better job, or a better life in a new country is lost. Save the Children was established in the United Kingdom in 1919 to improve the lives of children through better education, health care, and economic opportunities, as well as providing emergency aid in natural disasters, war, and other conflicts. Save the Children operates in more than 120 countries, and also offer emergency aid to children in need during wars or natural disasters. In times of crisis, Save the Children raises money to provide children with food, clean water, and other necessary supplies. In times of peace,

Save the Children fights for children to have better education and better health care everywhere in the world.

Save the Children champions for the rights of the world’s 2.3 billion children.

As a global leader in newborn and child health, Save the Children has a unique and credible voice on children’s health issues. It is recognized in the technical and global health community for key research and policy work on newborn health and for advocacy on behalf of maternal, newborn, and child health.

Protecting children is of high priority and a significant factor of Save the Children's vision as an organization. Save the Children protects children from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence in all regions of the world (Save the Children, 2020). They’ve developed programs that concentrate on children that are at risk, aspiring for the security of all children. Some examples of the child protection program activities include creating child friendly spaces in emergencies, reunifying separated and unaccompanied children with their families in emergencies, developing public awareness campaigns against child trafficking, piloting training programs for social workers to provide supportive care to families and children, and advocating for more effective national protection policies and child welfare reform (Save the Children, 2020). As a leading contributor to these fields, Save the Children is committed to placing child survival on the agenda of the United States by educating opinion leaders who can encourage greater emphasis and greater media attention given to these global tragedies.

The Save the Children website has an abundance of articles, resources, publications, reports, and ways to be updated and involved. I will be sharing some enlightening topics from the website. Please view this introductory video Who We Are Save the Children.

This podcast is an interview with a young woman and her experience and struggles.

Hi Cynthia,

Incidentally, I also selected Save the Children. I have seen this organization working with deprived children of Pakistan, and I was impressed by their work. Your selected podcast is interesting.

Hi Cynthia,

You never think human trafficking will be something that we have to worry about here in the suburbs of Pennsylvania, but now that everyone is wearing a mask, it brings a new level of worry to parents. I am looking forward to learning more about the Global Fund for Children in the coming weeks. Thanks for sharing!

Cynthia,

I love the quote. I am all about taking risks to see what happens on the other side and I encourage children and families to do the same. I look forward to hearing your insight.
