My Personal Research Journey

My Person Experience with the Research Process

I am still intimidated by the topic of research, and find the terminology above my head. I have to read, read, and read again to try make sense of it all. The textbook is a hard read for me. The chart was fairly easy and I hope that I grasp the process and am able to connect the dots.

My research will involve the questions that surround the topic of how does multicultural literature aid in the development of positive acceptance of others in preschool children? I also plan investigate what role does multicultural literature play in teaching the next generation of children about empathy and the value of differences?

Multicultural Literature

Picking a topic for research was a task for me, there are so many topics that can be researched in the early childhood field. I am still intimidated by the topic of research. However, I narrowed down to multicultural literature in the classroom. I think I always wonder whether or not the exposure to multicultural literature made an impact on how children viewed others and the world around them.

Only recently have I noticed the movement to incorporate more diverse literature in the classroom, and the emphasis on providing a curriculum that uses that literature into classroom activities. Understanding that multicultural literature is for all students and that it should be part of the curriculum in the classroom, it should be regarded as a resource rather than just an object for projecting the reality of a diverse person or community, Seeing that the majority of teachers do not mirror the cultural or linguistic experiences of the students they teach, teachers need to be able to interact with a large spectrum of disparities and cultural wealth with a diverse student body. The use of multicultural literature as an instrument in the classroom is one such way to do so. It's incredibly important to have multicultural literature in the classroom, and what you do with the literature is just as important.

Hi Cynthia, thank you so much for sharing! I completely agree with you on how research is intimidating, I feel the same way about the topic as well. I am hoping to gain more knowledge and tools on how to approach the research process in this course. I admire your research topic and think it is very important and beneficial to have multicultural literature in the classroom environment. A research topic that may be able to help you in this search is family engagement. I remember in our past courses we discussed the importance of knowing each one of our student's backgrounds, cultures, and family beliefs and practices. Family engagement is a good way to bring diversity into the classroom…

Hi Cynthia,

I really enjoyed reading your post as usual. I am also feeling some way overwhelmed with research also. We may just be reading to much into the assignments or the word "research" itself. I like the fact that your doing diverse literature in the classroom. Since now there is a big shift in society and culture.

Good job on your post :)
